8½ Milan Tickets at Teatro alla Scala
Federico Fellini’s 8½ comes to Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 29 November 2026 at 8:00 PM in a special format that brings cinema and live orchestral music together. The 1963 film will be screened in its original Italian version with English subtitles while Nino Rota’s original score is performed live by the Filarmonica della Scala, conducted by Timothy Brock.
This performance opens Fotogrammi, a new cine-concert project created by the Filarmonica della Scala around major works of auteur cinema. Browse available 8½ Milan tickets and choose your preferred seats for this one-off performance at La Scala.
Fellini’s 8½ with Nino Rota’s Music Live
Rather than a conventional film screening or orchestral concert, the 29 November event combines both forms. Fellini’s film will be projected with its original images and dialogue while the orchestra performs Rota’s soundtrack live in synchronization with the film.
The project is particularly significant because this marks the first performance of 8½ with its original soundtrack played live alongside the complete film. Conductor and composer Timothy Brock reconstructed the orchestral score from original materials preserved by the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice.
Brock has extensive experience reconstructing, restoring and conducting film music for live screenings, making him a natural choice for a production where precise coordination between screen and orchestra is central to the performance.
8½, Fellini and Nino Rota
Released in 1963, 8½ is one of Federico Fellini’s defining films. Marcello Mastroianni stars as Guido Anselmi, a filmmaker struggling with creative paralysis while memories, fantasies, professional pressures and relationships increasingly overlap.
Music is fundamental to that distinctive Fellinian world. Nino Rota was one of Fellini’s most important artistic collaborators, and his score for 8½ moves between lyrical passages, circus-like motifs and music that reflects the film’s shifts between reality and imagination.
At La Scala, audiences will be able to experience that relationship between image and music differently: Rota’s score will not simply accompany the screening as a recording, but will be recreated in the theatre by a live orchestra.
The First Fotogrammi Cine-Concert
The performance launches Fotogrammi, a project by the Filarmonica della Scala dedicated to cinema and orchestral film music. The series is planned around an annual cine-concert, bringing major films to the theatre with their scores performed live.
Choosing 8½ for the first edition gives the project a particularly strong connection to Italian cinema. It also places Rota’s music at the centre of an evening in one of Milan’s most important musical settings.
The event is presented in collaboration with CAM Sugar and Cineteca di Bologna, combining the film itself with the reconstructed orchestral material needed for the live performance.
8½ at Teatro alla Scala
Few venues could provide a more distinctive setting for this format than Teatro alla Scala. The historic Milan theatre is internationally associated with opera, ballet and orchestral music, but on 29 November the stage and auditorium take on a different role as La Scala becomes the setting for a large-scale film screening accompanied by the Filarmonica.
For visitors to Milan, the performance also offers an unusual way to experience the celebrated theatre: not through a traditional opera or ballet production, but through a meeting of Fellini’s cinema and Rota’s orchestral writing.
