Experience Gaetano Donizetti’s Anna Bolena at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, presented from 30 March to 16 April 2027. This new Teatro alla Scala production brings one of the great masterpieces of Italian Bel Canto back to one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.
Anna Bolena is a tragic opera in two acts with a libretto by Felice Romani. Inspired by the final days of Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII, the opera combines royal intrigue, betrayal, political ambition and emotional devastation. Through Donizetti’s powerful vocal writing, the drama becomes an intense portrait of a queen facing abandonment, humiliation and death.
This opera is one of the central works of Donizetti’s celebrated Tudor operas, where historical figures are transformed into unforgettable characters of passion, dignity and tragedy. With its demanding roles, expressive arias and dramatic ensembles, Anna Bolena remains one of the great showcases of the Bel Canto repertoire.
The 2027 performances at Teatro alla Scala are conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa, with staging by Chiara Muti, sets by Alessandro Camera, costumes by Tommaso Lagattolla and lighting by Vincent Longuemare. This new production offers a fresh theatrical vision of Donizetti’s historical tragedy, combining musical elegance with dramatic intensity.
The cast features Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Monica Conesa as Anna Bolena, Roberto Tagliavini as Enrico VIII, Raffaella Lupinacci as Giovanna Seymour, and Juan Diego Flórez and Juan Francisco Gatell as Lord Percy.
