Chung and the Filarmonica della Scala
Myung-Whun Chung's relationship with the Filarmonica della Scala stretches back more than three decades. In 2023, the orchestra appointed him its first Conductor Emeritus, recognising a partnership that has included well over 100 concerts and numerous international performances.
The concert comes at a particularly significant point in that relationship. Chung is set to succeed Riccardo Chailly as Music Director of Teatro alla Scala in 2027, further strengthening his connection with the Milan institution.
During 2026, Chung has already appeared repeatedly at La Scala. His work with the Filarmonica has included Beethoven and Brahms, repertoire that has played an important role throughout his long collaboration with the orchestra.
Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider Plays Bruch
The solo spotlight belongs to Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, appearing on violin in Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 46.
Szeps-Znaider has built an international career on both sides of the podium, combining his work as a violin soloist with an increasingly prominent conducting career. His dual perspective makes this appearance particularly interesting: at La Scala he returns to his role as solo violinist for one of Bruch's most distinctive works.
Inspired by Scottish folk melodies, the Scottish Fantasy gives the soloist room for both lyrical playing and considerable virtuosity. Rather than following the conventional concerto format, Bruch constructed the work as a sequence of interconnected movements based around contrasting Scottish themes.
Programme at Teatro alla Scala
The concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, a compact and dramatic orchestral work that establishes a very different character from the Bruch piece that follows.
Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46 then places Szeps-Znaider at the centre of the performance, pairing the violin with an orchestral score shaped by folk-inspired melodies and Romantic colour.
The programme also includes Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14. One of the defining orchestral works of the Romantic period, Berlioz's five-movement symphony is renowned for its unusually vivid orchestration and recurring idée fixe, which transforms as the work moves through increasingly dramatic scenes.
Together, the three works give the evening a broad musical arc: Beethoven's concentrated dramatic writing, Bruch's violin-led Romanticism and the large-scale orchestral imagination of Berlioz.
The concert that opens the Filarmonica's season
This is the opening concert of the Filarmonica della Scala's 45th season, which Chung conducts as the orchestra's incoming Music Director of Teatro alla Scala. The season is built around Beethoven: each concert opens with one of his nine overtures, and this one begins with Coriolan.
For this performance, the attraction is not simply the venue. Chung's longstanding relationship with the orchestra, his forthcoming role as La Scala's Music Director and Szeps-Znaider's appearance in Bruch create a programme with a clear connection to the institution's current musical life.
