Experience one of the most powerful and controversial operas of the 20th century at Teatro alla Scala. On the 50th anniversary of Dmitrij Šostakovič’s death, La Scala opens its new season with his masterpiece Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, a gripping tale of passion, betrayal, and revenge.

Based on the novella by Nikolaj Leskov, the opera follows Katerina Izmaylova, a woman trapped in a loveless marriage who, driven by desire and despair, commits two murders that lead her to ruin and madness. Banned for decades after Stalin’s condemnation, this work remains a searing portrait of human emotion and artistic defiance.
