Daniele Gatti was born in Milan. From 1992 to 1997 he was Music Director of the Orchestra of Dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1997 he became Music Director of the Bologna Municipal Theater Orchestra. He is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2005, Gatti was invited to give a concert with Zubin Mehta and Christian Thielemann to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reopening and renovation of the Vienna State Opera in 1955. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut in 2008 in the Parsifal produced by Stefan Herheim.

In 1994, Daniele Gatti made his Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) debut as a guest conductor. He was immediately awarded the position of Chief Conductor of the RPO, which he accepted in 1996. Gatti is said to have restored the RPO to the same status as other major London orchestras. During his tenure in 2004, the RPO received its first permanent residence at Cadogan Hall. In April 2007, Gatti was one of eight conductors of the British Orchestra to support the 10-year classical music manifesto Building on Excellence: Orchestras for the 21st Century to increase the exposure of classical music in the UK, including free donations All British schoolchildren are admitted to classical concerts. In 2009, Gatti resigned as the chief conductor of the RPO and became the honorary conductor of the orchestra.

Gatti was Music Director of the Orchestre National de France from 2008 to 2016. From 2009 to 2012, he was the Principal Conductor of the Zurich Opera House. In October 2014, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (KCO) appointed Gatti as its seventh Principal Conductor, effective September 2016. He made his debut as KCO guest conductor in April 2004. 

In May 2016, Gatti was appointed Artistic Advisor of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Since 2016 he has been teaching at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. In the 2016-2017 season, Gatti conducted for the first time as a guest conductor at the Rome Opera House. He returned for subsequent guest events for the next two seasons. In December 2018, the company announced the appointment of Gatti as its new music director, effective immediately.  Since May 2019, he has been the Music Director of the Mozart Orchestra.

In 2000, Gatti conducted the Dresden State Philharmonic for the first time as a guest conductor. In June 2022, the orchestra announced the selection of Gatti as its next chief conductor, effective from 2024.
