Egypt. The monk Athanaël wants to convert the courtesan Thaïs to Christianity. She tries to seduce him, but he remains firm until he achieves his conversion. After leaving her in a monastery, he admits that he loves her. After some time, Athanaël dreams of Thaïs dying. Upon awakening, he runs to the monastery, where he finds her at death’s door. Thaïs thanks her for her conversion, Athanaël confesses her love, but she does not listen to him.

Thäis Is a French Opera in three acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet. This Opera is based on the novel Thaïs by Anatole France. It was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris on 16 March 1894, starring the American soprano Sibyl Sanderson, for whom Massenet had written the title role.
