Alcatraz occupies a 1946 industrial building at Via Valtellina 25, in Milan's Maciachini district north of Porta Garibaldi. Originally a mechanical workshop and later a shipping warehouse, the building was radically converted between 1997 and 1998 into a multifunctional venue of over 3,000 square metres, opening in 1998 under Roberto Citterio and Enrico Rovelli. It has since become one of the reference points of Milanese nightlife and live music.

With a capacity of around 3,500 people at full configuration, Alcatraz splits its week in two: club nights at the weekend across three rooms, each dedicated to a different musical style, and during the week live concerts by Italian and international acts, plus conventions and large corporate events. Its mid-size scale places it between Milan's small clubs and the city's arenas, which is why so many touring bands stop here.

Getting there

The nearest metro stop is Maciachini on Line M3, roughly 300–400 metres away, about a five-minute walk. Buses 70, 90, 91 and 92 and trams 3 and 4 stop at Farini/Stelvio nearby. By car, exit the Tangenziale at Zara/Fulvio Testi; a supervised 24-hour car park operates at Via Valtellina 7, about 500 metres from the venue.
