Riccardo Chailly Milan Tickets 2026–2027 – Teatro alla Scala

Riccardo Chailly returns to Teatro alla Scala in Milan for six symphonic concerts across November 2026 and March 2027, presenting two major works from the classical repertoire: Anton Bruckner's Ninth Symphony and Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion (Johannes-Passion).

The performances take place on November 16, 17 and 20, 2026, followed by March 23, 24 and 26, 2027, with every concert beginning at 8:00 PM.

Each set of dates features a different musical programme, offering audiences the opportunity to experience Chailly's interpretations of two contrasting masterpieces. Visitors looking for Riccardo Chailly Milan tickets can explore available seating and choose their preferred performance at the historic Teatro alla Scala.

Bruckner's Ninth Symphony – November 2026

The first series of concerts brings Riccardo Chailly to the podium of the Filarmonica della Scala for Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 in D minor.

Performances are scheduled for Monday, November 16; Tuesday, November 17; and Friday, November 20, 2026, all at 8:00 PM.

Bruckner's Ninth Symphony occupies a distinctive place in the late-Romantic orchestral repertoire. Dedicated to God, the composition remained unfinished at the composer's death in 1896 and has traditionally been performed in its three-movement form, ending with the monumental Adagio.

For these Milan concerts, Chailly presents a version incorporating a reconstructed fourth movement, based on surviving musical material. The reconstruction is credited to Nicola Samale, John A. Phillips, Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs and Giuseppe Mazzuca, with a subsequent revision by Phillips.

This approach gives audiences an opportunity to hear the symphony in an expanded form, exploring the musical architecture that Bruckner had envisaged for his final orchestral work.

The Filarmonica della Scala, founded in 1982 by Claudio Abbado and the musicians of Teatro alla Scala, provides the orchestral forces for these performances.

Bach's St John Passion – March 2027

Chailly returns to La Scala in spring 2027 for a very different programme: Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion, BWV 245, performed with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala.

The concerts take place on Tuesday, March 23; Wednesday, March 24; and Friday, March 26, 2027, beginning at 8:00 PM.

First performed in Leipzig in 1724, Bach's Johannes-Passion is one of the defining sacred works of the Baroque era. Based on the Gospel of John, it recounts the arrest, trial, crucifixion and burial of Jesus through a combination of biblical narration, expressive arias, chorales and dramatic choral passages.

The Milan production brings together an internationally recognised vocal cast. Mark Padmore performs the role of the Evangelist, with Peter Harvey as Jesus. The soloists also include soprano Grace Davidson, mezzo-soprano Anke Vondung, tenor Manuel Günther and baritone Peter Mattei, who performs the roles of Peter and Pilate alongside the bass arias.

The Teatro alla Scala Chorus is prepared by chorus master Alberto Malazzi, while Riccardo Chailly conducts the orchestra and singers.

Unlike the purely orchestral Bruckner concerts, these March performances highlight Chailly's work with vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, bringing Bach's dramatic sacred composition to the La Scala stage.

Riccardo Chailly and Teatro alla Scala

Riccardo Chailly has enjoyed a long artistic relationship with Milan and Teatro alla Scala, where he served as Music Director from 2015 to 2026.

Born in Milan, he has established an international conducting career through collaborations with leading European orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.

His recorded repertoire includes significant interpretations of the symphonies of Bruckner, Mahler and Beethoven, alongside opera and works by Italian composers.

The two programmes scheduled for November 2026 and March 2027 reflect different aspects of his conducting repertoire. Bruckner's Ninth demands control of large-scale symphonic structures, powerful orchestral sonorities and long musical developments. Bach's St John Passion, by contrast, requires a close relationship between instrumental musicians, chorus and solo voices.

For classical music audiences, these concerts offer two distinct opportunities to experience Chailly's musicianship in Milan.

Classical Music at Teatro alla Scala in Milan

Located on Piazza della Scala in central Milan, Teatro alla Scala is one of the world's most celebrated opera houses and an important international venue for symphonic music.

Opened in 1778, the theatre has hosted many of the most influential conductors and performers in classical music history. Alongside its renowned opera and ballet productions, La Scala presents symphonic seasons featuring its own orchestra, the Filarmonica della Scala and visiting international ensembles.

Its historic auditorium provides an exceptional setting for both the orchestral scale of Bruckner's Ninth Symphony and the vocal and instrumental detail of Bach's St John Passion.
