Opera Pelléas et Mélisande by Claude Debussy – Teatro alla Scala, Milan (April 22 – May 9, 2026)
Discover the subtle beauty and symbolism of Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, performed live at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan from April 22 to May 9, 2026. This lyrical drama in five acts and twelve scenes, with a libretto by Maurice Maeterlinck, remains one of the greatest achievements in musical theatre.
Conducted by Maxime Pascal, one of today’s most engaging French conductors, this new production by Teatro alla Scala is directed by the visionary Romeo Castellucci, who also oversees set, costumes, and lighting. Dramaturgy is by Christian Longchamp, with artistic collaboration from Giulia Giamona, promising a fusion of sacred, visionary theatre and symbolist music.
The performance features the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala, and stars an exceptional cast including Bernard Richter as Pelléas, Sara Blanch as Mélisande, Simon Keenlyside as Golaud, Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Geneviève, and John Relyea as Arkel.
Debussy’s opera, drawn from Maeterlinck’s symbolist play, explores mystery, love, and destiny through an ethereal musical language, creating an intimate yet profound dramatic experience. The production continues La Scala’s tradition of landmark interpretations, following the legendary performances conducted by Victor de Sabata, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Georges Prêtre.
To deepen the audience’s experience, a pre-performance lecture will be held one hour before each show at the Ridotto dei Palchi “A. Toscanini,” hosted by Liana Püschel.
