When Myung-Whun Chung was on the podium, Filarmonica della Scala played spontaneously, bringing Brahms’ restless music to life. He sometimes does not interfere, and the resulting feeling is not so much that the conductor gathers his power, as it is that the orchestra relies on the energy generated within him, and his free handling of speed (especially in terms of rhythm) makes the orchestra soar. Myung-Whun Chung is able to draw rich colors in a performance where the opposing light and dark elements in the music score are always finely balanced.

The moody first movement is sometimes calm and unruly, while in the gorgeous second movement, the sound of strings exudes brighter colors from the trickle and yearning brass. The rattle bed in the third quarter may convey more indulgence. However, with its wonderful alternation between brave waves and crazy outbreaks, the lively ending is just right.
