This eagerly anticipated production is a free adaptation of the bestselling literary masterpiece, with a libretto crafted by Francesco Filidei and Stefano Busellato, in collaboration with Hannah Dübgen and Carlo Pernigotti.

This opera in two acts transports audiences into the mysterious world of a 14th-century Italian monastery, where knowledge, faith, and power clash in a suspenseful series of murders. Follow the brilliant friar Guillermo de Baskerville as he unravels the dark secrets hidden within the abbey’s walls, all while confronting philosophical and theological dilemmas that echo through time. The opera, like the novel, is a meditation on the quest for truth and the dangers of censorship, brought to life with powerful music and dramatic storytelling.

Featuring the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra and Chorus, as well as the Treble Voices Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala Academy, this new production is a milestone in modern opera. Conducted by some of the world’s finest talents and supported by the latest staging techniques, this Teatro alla Scala New Production is co-produced with Opéra National de Paris and Fondazione Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, underscoring the international significance of this premiere.

Francesco Filidei, one of today’s most innovative composers, infuses his score with tension and emotion, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of fear, mystery, and intellectual pursuit that defines Eco’s novel. The music is both evocative and profound, blending contemporary orchestration with medieval echoes, in a production commissioned by Teatro alla Scala and Opéra National de Paris.
